Trail(s) Taken South Taconic Tr, Frissell Tr.

Ah, my 2nd state highpoint of the month, 5th of the year. Mount Frissell has its peak in MA, but along it south flank lies the highest point in Connecticut. I would have loved to explore the area more but the fog was a real view killer so I only went up to the summit of Frissell and back. I chose the west approach as it looked more interesting. The east approach was way too short to justify the 50 mile drive! The west approach stars off on Quarry Hill rd in Northeast NY (Yes, that's the town name). The main ascent was VERY steep. Surprisingly steep actually. It included some pretty nice cascades and a really nice waterfall. Once you finished the main ascent the rest is easy. By the the nicest part of the hike the the ridge South and north of Brace Mountain (and Brace mtn itself). This is like a stretched out carbon copy of the slightly higher elevated Hoosac Ledges in Florida/North Adams MA. A must see! lots of ledge and lots of stunted hardwoods. There were birches growing there that were the size (and shape) of blueberry bushes! Brace summit has a huge cairn on top. I bet the views here are nice when the weather isn't 100% fog.

North of Brace is the trail to Frissell. (it is red blazed, its a sort of confusing intersection). This trail happens to pass over the ever popular Tristate marker (CT,MA,NY) from there is a short climb to the CT highpoint on the south flank of Frissell, then another short climb to Frissell summit itself where there is a register. There were lots of entries in there just from the last few months, clearly a popular peak!

The descent was the same thing, just in reverse the only difference was the fog has sank an extra 600 feet instead of risen (very disappointing). I will definitely be giving this hike another shot on a clear day. I chose not to make a loop of Alander today because I figured "no views? what the point?" There will be other times! :)
