Sandwich 12-16-06
After a month long hiatus from the Whites I decided to climb Sandwich Mountain. I chose to take Sandwich mountain trail on the way up, and Drakes brook trail on the way down. Sandwich trail was definitely steeper than Drakes, and it was much more interesting to boot. Snow didn't appear until around 2800 feet. I noticed fresh boot prints in the snow and determined I was not far behind a small group. When I reached the spur trail to Jennings peak I observed the tracks leading to but not from the peak, so I knew I was about to meet the other hikers. Sure enough there they were at the summit of Jennings peak! we spoke briefly and looked at the non existent views. I took off for Sandwich Dome and reached there after less than an hour. No views were seen and no summit register was found. As I was heading back down I met the other hikers again. I told them of the non views and specifically of the piece of metal lodged in the rock. One of the hikers suggested that perhaps the piece of metal was Excalibur, and much laughter followed :). Click Here for the Hike Map
